The life expectancy of adults is longer than that in many more complex societies, even tough the Bushmen suffer higher infant mortality and a higher death rate from accidents because of the absence of doctors and hospitals. About a tenth of the Bushmen studied by the interdisciplinary team were older than sixty years – or approximately the percentage of the elderly in many agricultural and industrialized societies where medical care is available.
Nor, of course, do the Bushmen have to work very hard. Males are not expected to hunt until they have been married (usually between the ages of twenty and twenty-five) and have a family to feed. So, on a typical day, healthy young men spend their time visiting at nearby camps or resting at their own, while their older relatives provide food for them. And most males retire from active hunting in their fifties. The combination of carefree adolescence and an unstrenuous old age means that about forty per cent of the population contributes virtually nothing to the band’s subsistence.

Né ovviamente i Boscimani hanno bisogno di lavorare sodo. Non si pretende che i maschi caccino fino a quando non sono sposati (di solito tra i venti e i venticinque anni d’età) e hanno una famiglia da sfamare. Quindi in un giorno tipico i giovani in salute spendono il loro tempo facendo visita agli accampamenti vicini o riposandosi nel proprio, mentre i loro parenti più vecchi provvedono al loro sostentamento. E la maggior parte dei maschi si ritirano dalla caccia attiva tra i cinquanta e i sessant’anni d’età. La combinazione tra un’adolescenza spensierata e una vecchiaia senza fatiche significa che circa il quaranta percento della popolazione non dà praticamente alcun contributo al sostentamento della banda.
